The background for the establishment of the foundation is that the operation of the palace and its associated agriculture is difficult to reconcile with TRH Prince Joachim’s and Princess Marie’s other work and engagement in official duties and patronages. At the same time, the couple wish to move to the Copenhagen area due to family considerations.
 
Prince Joachim and Princess Marie attach importance to maintaining their close connection to Møgeltønder and Southern Jutland. As patrons, the couple will therefore continue to reside in the palace during periods of the year.
 
“Princess Marie and I are happy about the solution we have reached with the founders of the new foundation. It has been a difficult decision to transfer Schackenborg, but I am convinced that we, with this solution, ensure Schackenborg’s future in the best way possible,” says Prince Joachim.
 
The founders are contributing, in all, 113 million DKK in connection with the establishment of The Schackenborg Foundation. Of this, Prince Joachim contributes 13 million DKK, corresponding to the value of the national gift that was given to Schackenborg in 1995.
 
The Schackenborg Foundation’s objective is to maintain Schackenborg Palace as one of that part of the country’s most important historic properties and, with that, ensure that the cultural value the palace has for the region continues to evolve.

The foundation hopes to continue to give the general public access for visits in the park and occasionally open the palace to the public just as Schackenborg Palace and park shall be made available for special public arrangements within in the cultural, scientific and education-related areas. 

The Schackenborg Foundation will be responsible for the maintenance of Schackenborg Palace and park and run the agricultural areas that belong under the Foundation.
 
The foundation is established with effect on 1 July 2014.
