Programme for state visit from Iceland

Iceland’s president, HE Guðni Th. Jóhannesson, and First Lady Eliza Jean Reid pay a state visit in Denmark from 24 – 26 January 2017.

Tuesday, 24 January

Arrival

HE Guðni Th. Jóhannesson and First Lady Eliza Jean Reid arrive at Christian VII's Palace, Amalienborg, where they are received by HM The Queen and HRH Prince Henrik.
In connection with the arrival, the President and First Lady's car is escorted by the Guard Hussar Regiment’s mounted squadron.
Afterwards, there will be a official photographing of The Queen and Prince Henrik and the President and First Lady.

Visit at Jónshús

The President and First Lady visit Jónshús, which is an Icelandic cultural centre in Copenhagen. During the visit, the President and First Lady will be shown a commemorative exhibition about Jón Sigurðsson, who led Iceland’s independence movement.

Visit at Christiansborg Palace

The President and First Lady visit Christiansborg Palace, where they will be shown the Royal Reception Rooms, including the Fredensborg painting and Bjørn Nørgaard’s tapestries in the Great Hall.

Presentation of Iceland’s national gift

HM The Queen and the President and First Lady participate in an event at The Black Diamond, Copenhagen. Iceland’s national gift will be presented. It is a collection of retranslated Icelandic sagas, which will be accessible at Danish libraries and institutions of higher education. In addition, there will be various musical features at the event.

State dinner at Christian VII's Palace, Amalienborg

The Queen and Prince Henrik host a state dinner at Christian VII's Palace, Amalienborg, in honour of the Icelandic President and First Lady. The royal family, the government, the Presidium of the Danish Parliament, the Icelandic delegation and selected companies etc. will take part.

At the state dinner, there will be speeches by The Queen and the President.

Meeting with The Mary Foundation

The First Lady and HRH The Crown Princess participate in a meeting with The Mary Foundation at Frederik VIII's Palace, Amalienborg.

Visit at the Arnamagnæan Collection

The President visits the Arnamagnæan Collection at the University of Copenhagen. The Arnamagnæan Collection is a compilation of manuscripts that can be dated back to the Middle Ages. The manuscripts are used today to research texts and linguistics in older Nordic languages. The collection consists of approx. 3000 manuscripts, of which approx. 1400 are preserved at the University of Copenhagen, while the rest of the collection is in Iceland.

Seminar at the Confederation of Danish Industry

The President and The Crown Prince are present at a seminar on innovation, sustainability and food production at the Confederation of Danish Industry, Copenhagen. The President opens the seminar.

Visit at Tante Olgas Børnehus

The First Lady, The Crown Princess and The Mary Foundation visit the kindergarten "Tante Olgas Børnehus" in Copenhagen. During the visit, the kindergarten teachers and children show how they use “LæseLeg” (“BookFun”) at the kindergarten. BookFun is material developed by The Mary Foundation. Through actively involving children in reading stories aloud, BookFun contributes to strengthening their language skills and self-confidence.

In continuation of the Confederation of Danish Industry’s seminar, the President and The Crown Prince visit State of Green. State of Green is a private-public partnership between the Danish government, relevant companies and players within the energy sector. State of Green works to make Denmark a pioneering country in green growth and to make Denmark independent of fossil fuels by 2025.

The President and The Crown Prince visit ICES – the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea. The President and The Crown Prince will get a presentation about the organization and work of ICES. ICES is a global organization that researches and advises about sustainable use of the ocean and its ecosystems. The organization functions as a network through which researchers and other experts share their knowledge and research results.

The President and First Lady and the Crown Prince Couple visit the University of Copenhagen. During the visit, the President will give a speech, after which there will be a round-table discussion on for example globalization from a Nordic perspective.

Luncheon at the Copenhagen Hospitality College

The President and First Lady and the Crown Prince Couple visit the Copenhagen Hospitality College. During a tour of the school, the President and First Lady and the Crown Prince Couple get an opportunity to taste various Nordic dishes the students have created. Afterwards, the President and First Lady and the Crown Prince Couple take part in a luncheon.

The President and First Lady visit the Icelandic company MAREL, which supplies machines for the meat, fish and poultry industries in a large part of the world. During the visit, the President and First Lady will, among other things, be shown several of the company’s food production machines.

The President and First Lady visit Bredgade Kunsthandel and open the exhibition “The Icelandic Connection”.

Icelandic reciprocal event at Nordatlantens Brygge

The President and First Lady hold a reception in honour of The Queen and Prince Henrik at the waterfront cultural centre Nordatlantens Brygge as a conclusion to the state visit. The royal family will participate. There will be speeches and entertainment at the reception.
