Programme for state visit in Ghana

HM The Queen pays a state visit in Ghana 23-25 November 2017 and leads a Danish business delegation.

Among other things, the state visit has the objective of supporting the Danish-Ghanaian collaboration “From Aid to Trade”, which has attained a great amount of goodwill through the years. The visit will also focus on history, culture and commerce. The Danish business delegation will be represented by competencies in the areas of agriculture and food products, sustainability, the maritime sector, infrastructure and railways.

During the stay, The Queen will be officially received by the Ghanaian president, HE Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, participate in the opening of the business promotional campaign, and visit various companies and cultural institutions.

This will be The Queen’s 53rd outward-bound state visit and the first visit in Ghana.

The Queen will be accompanied by foreign affairs minister Anders Samuelsen and environment and food minister Esben Lunde Larsen.

Thursday, 23 November

Accra

Official reception

The Queen is received by Ghana’s president, HE Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, at the presidential palace, Flagstaff House. In connection with the reception, The Queen inspects the Guard of Honour, and the national anthems of Denmark and Ghana are played.

Visit at business exhibition

The Queen visit the Danish business delegation’s exhibition at Hotel Kempinski. Here, The Queen will visit a number of companies within the three sector tracks of sustainability, agriculture and the maritime trade.

Business luncheon

The Queen participates in a business luncheon at Hotel Kempinski and delivers a speech.

Visit with HM The King of Osu

The Queen visits HM The King of Osu.

Visit at Osu Castle

The Queen visits Osu Castle, which is situated by the Atlantic Ocean coastline. Upon arrival, The Queen will be received by local Ghanaian kings and be told about the castle’s history.  The Queen will also be shown around Osu Castle during the visit.

After the tour, The Queen will attend the launching of the book “Stones Tell Stories at Osu – Memories of a Host Community of the Danish Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade”. Queen Margrethe and Prince Henrik’s Foundation has granted an amount for reprinting of the book, which deals with the old Danish houses in Accra and how the Danish language and names of those days are spread out in the coastal region today. The book was written by Prof. Henry Nii-Adziri Wellington.

Visit at Arts & Design Centre

The Queen visits the Arts & Design Centre, which was founded in 2014 by artist and carpenter Constance Swaniker. The centre’s objective is to train young people to turn out products of craftsman-like high quality and good design at an affordable price.

The Queen will be given a tour around the arts centre and be shown examples of the artwork produced here.

State dinner

The Queen participates in a state dinner hosted by Ghana’s president, HE Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, at Accra International Conference Centre. During the dinner, the President and The Queen will deliver speeches.

 

Friday,  24 November

Accra

Visit at Novo Nordisk Diabetes Support Center

The Queen visits Novo Nordisk Diabetes Support Center and gets a presentation about its work. During the visit, The Queen will get a tour of the clinic and see, among other things, the consultation area and the pharmacy.

Visit at Tema

The Queen visits Accra’s port, Tema, and takes part in a conducted tour.

Visit at Mærsk

The Queen visits Mærsk’s port office and takes part in a luncheon afterwards.

Visit at the Embassy of Denmark

The Queen visits the Embassy of Denmark in Ghana. Here, The Queen will greet the embassy’s staff and participate in a reception for Danes residing in Ghana.

Reciprocal arrangement

The Queen hosts a reciprocal arrangement at Hotel Mövenpick.  

 

Saturday, 25 November

Visit at pearl market

The Queen visits a local pearl market and sees some of the market’s many stalls.

Visit at Cedi Bead Factory

The Queen visits the pearl factory Cedi Bead Factory and takes part in a conducted tour. Here, The Queen is shown the various processes in pearl production, among other things.

Press conference

The Queen holds a press conference at Hotel Royal Senshi together with foreign affairs minister Anders Samuelsen.

Sailing tour on the Volta River
