Programme for visit to the Faroe Islands

HM The Queen pays an official visit to the Faroe Islands the days of 12-16 June 2016 aboard the Royal Yacht Dannebrog.

The Queen’s cruise on the Royal Yacht Dannebrog to the North Atlantic islands offers a wide-ranging programme in which The Queen, among other things, will experience the distinctive nature and culture of the Faroes.
The prime minister of the Faroe Islands, Aksel V. Johannesen, is the host of the visit.

Programme

Monday, 13 June
Arrival at Drelnes
09.30

The Queen, on Monday 13 June, visits Suduroy, which is the southernmost island of the Faroes. The Queen participates in the official reception on the quay, where prime minister Aksel V. Johannesen gives a welcoming speech.

Visit at the Culture Centre “SALT”
09.45

“SALT” is an old salt silo which is about to be converted into a culture centre. The Queen is received by director Ólavur Rasmussen, who tells about the project and conducts a tour.

Visit in Hov
10.30

The Queen visits the gymnasium and the social and health care school in Hov. The Queen is received by Rigmor Dam, the minister of culture and education, who gives a speech and leads a tour.

Visit at the senior citizens’ home Sambýlið in Hvalba
11.30

The Queen visits the senior citizens’ home in Sambýlið and is received by mayor Trúgvi Gudmundarson. Afterwards, Barbara Julsgart, the head of the senior citizens’ home, provides a briefing and conducts a tour.

Visit at the sports centre in Hvalba

At the sports centre in Hvalba,  The Queen is shown a model of the rock cavern ”Hellið” from the island Lille Dímun, and afterwards there will be a guided tour of an exhibition about the coal mines around Hvalba.

Luncheon

The Queen participates in a luncheon at Hvalba Municipality’s sports centre. 

Visit in the village Sandvík

The Queen is shown the oldest house on Suderø, which stands in its original form.

Visit at Den Kongelige Enehandel
13.45

The Queen visits the village Tvøroyri and is received by mayor Kristin Michelsen. The Queen is shown around Den Kongelige Enehandel (The Royal Monopoly) by historian Kári Jespersen, who tells about the times on Tvøroyri 180 years ago. Afterwards, The Queen visits one of the warehouses, which is now used as a youth centre.

The Queen visits the fish processing facility Varðin Pelagic and is received by director Bogi Jacobsen, who gives a briefing about the company.

The Queen participates in Tvøroyrar Municipality’s banquet at “Seglloftið”.

From the Royal Yacht Dannebrog, The Queen views Faroese dancing on the quay before sailing to Tórshavn.

Tuesday, 14 June
Arrival in Tórshavn

The Queen arrives in Tórshavn and is welcomed.

Visit to Tinganes

The Queen visits Tinganes, where prime minister Aksel V. Johannesen presents the government and conducts a tour around Tinganes.

Visit to the Parliament

The Queen pays a visit to the Parliament, where its speaker, Páll á Reynatúgvu, offers a welcome and leads a tour around. The members of the parliament are presented to The Queen.

Official reception by Tórshavn Municipality
​​​​​​​11.50

The Queen takes part in Tórshavn Municipality’s official reception, which takes place by the new stone staircase in the town centre. The Queen is welcomed by mayor Heðin Mortensen, who presents the members of the town council.

Visit at the culture and music spot Renseriet​​​​​​​
12.30

The Queen visits the culture and music spot Renseriet and, upon arrival, is received by Jóan Petur Hentze, who is the director of social and cultural affairs for Tórshavn Municipality. Afterwards, The Queen views a picture exhibition about the royal visits to the Faroes through the ages.

Luncheon

​​​​​​​The Queen takes part in Tórshavn Municipality’s luncheon at Hotel Hafina.

Visit at the Culture Centre Østrøm

​​​​​​The Queen visits the culture centre Østrøm, which is an independent sales and culture spot for Faroese designers. The Queen is received by director Henrik Juul Hansen and is introduced to Faroese clothes and modern Faroese design.

Visit at the graphics workshop Steinprent

The Queen visits the graphics workshop Steinprent, where an exhibition by Tróndur Patursson is presented.

Visit at the nursing home Boðanesheimið

The nursing home Boðanesheimið is the newest one in Tórshavn Municipality. The Queen will be shown around and be present during community signing.

Banquet

The Queen participates in a banquet at Nordens Hus. Prime minister Aksel V. Johannesen hosts the dinner.

Wednesday, 15 June
Arrival on Sandoy

The Queen arrives on Sandoy, which is the fifth largest Faroese island, and is received by mayor Brandur Sandoy.

Visit at the art museum Listasavnið
​​​​​​​10.15

At the art museum Listasavnið, The Queen is received by museum director Súsan í Jákupsstovu, who will present works by Faroese pictorial artists.

The nature area Grótvik
​​​​​​​11.05

En route to the nature area Grótvik, The Queen visits the scenic viewing point Gívunarspor and is told the legend of Gívrina. At Grótvik, The Queen will be shown the fossils in the basalt layer and be told about the evolution of nature there. The Queen will be informed about the latest archaeological excavations, which show that there have been settlements on the Faroes dating back to the year 400.

Sandur Village

The Queen participates in a luncheon held by the High Commissioner of the Faroe Islands and afterwards officially leaves the Faroes.
