On 14 May 2004, Denmark got a new Crown Princess. In the almost 8 years that have passed since Mary Elizabeth Donaldson married the Crown Prince in the Church of Our Lady in Copenhagen, the Crown Princess has represented Denmark on several official trips to foreign lands and has been warmly received on a wide range of visits to organisations, companies and towns around the country.

In her patronage, the Crown Princess focuses on the social and health areas along with humanitarian help, Danish fashion and design, culture, and research. In 2007, because of her interest in social work, the Crown Princess set up The Mary Foundation, which has special focus on social isolation. Since the launch of the first project in 2008, The Mary Foundation has distinguished itself within the focus areas “Bullying and Well-being”, “Domestic Violence”, and “Loneliness”.

As a patron of Designers’ Nest and the Copenhagen International Fashion Fair, the Crown Princess has wanted to help build international awareness of Danish fashion and design. Earlier this week, the Crown Princess took part in events involving patrons at Copenhagen Fashion Week.

In regard to humanitarian work, the Crown Princess has most recently visited famine-stricken areas near the Dadaab refugee camp in Kenya in connection with last year’s national aid collection for the Horn of Africa. As a patron of the Danish Refugee Council, the Crown Princess has also travelled to refugee camps in Uganda.

The interest the Crown Princess has in the work of Danish soldiers has resulted in several visits with soldiers in Danish camps. The Crown Princess herself has completed officer training in the Home Guard and has the title of lieutenant.

The Crown Princess was engaged to the Crown Prince on 8 October 2003, and the couple married on 14 May 2004. The Crown Prince Couple today have four children: HRH Prince Christian (age 6), HRH Princess Isabella (age 4), and the 1-year-old twins, HRH Prince Vincent and HRH Princess Josephine.
