The State Civil List Annuity (Appanage)

The annual government allowance, known as the appanage, is laid down in Act no. 491 of 7 June 2001 regarding the civil list of HM Queen Margrethe II (the Civil List Act).

The government allowance is adjusted twice a year in accordance with the pay index development for state sector employees. As of 1 October 2010, the civil list payment totals DKK 75.1 million a year, of which HRH The Prince Consort receives 10 per cent and HRH Princess Benedicte 1.5 per cent, corresponding to DKK 7.5 million and DKK 1.1 million respectively.

The government allowance is to cover the expenses of The Queen and The Prince Consort relating to staff, the operation of the Royal Household, administration and properties as well as expenses of a more private nature. For Princess Benedikte, the allowance is to cover representative expenses in connection with official obligations.

Under the Civil List Act, the Government places a number of palaces and their inventory at the disposal of The Queen. The Government pays the expenses incurred for external maintenance, restoration and modernisation of the palaces, whereas interior maintenance of the palaces is covered by The Queen.

In addition to the government allowance for The Queen, the Civil List Act provides an allowance of DKK 18.5 million for HRH The Crown Prince, of which HRH The Crown Princess receives 10 per cent. An allowance is provided for HRH Prince Joachim of DKK 3.3 million.

Under income tax legislation and under the Act on the Registration of Motor Vehicles, The Queen, The Prince Consort, Princess Benedikte, TRH The Crown Prince and The Crown Princess, TRH Prince Joachim and Princess Marie are exempted from paying income tax and vehicle registration tax etc.

According to the Civil List Act, VAT is fully reimbursed corresponding to the state scheme governing the reimbursement of VAT on purchases.

The Queen, The Prince Consort, Princess Benedikte, TRH The Crown Prince and The Crown Princess, TRH Prince Joachim and Princess Marie are subject to the standard regulations concerning payment of death duties and inheritance tax as well as real property tax.
