Mr President, Mrs Kim,
The Prince Consort and I are delighted to welcome you to Denmark. We have looked forward to being able to reciprocate the generous hospitality extended to us during our State Visit to Korea in 2007. Our welcome should therefore also be seen as a salute to the Korean people and as a reflection of our admiration for the impressive development which Korean society has experienced over merely six decades.
During our visit, we gained a vivid impression of Korea’s rich cultural heritage and we sensed the great importance of this culture and this heritage in the Korean society.
Mr President,
Anybody who visits Korea today will soon discover that the “Land of the Morning Calm” is not so calm any longer. The Korean people have not achieved growth and development without great efforts. What has been referred to as the “Miracle on the Han River” is no miracle at all, but the result of the Korean people’s ambition, determination and – especially – hard-working effort.
There is an old Oriental proverb saying that “When the winds of change blow, some build walls, others build windmills”. Korea has never built walls in times of change – quite on the contrary. Korea has, quite literally, chosen to build windmills.
During your term of office, Korea has embarked on a very ambitious course of green growth. It holds the seeds of future growth and development, both for Korea and the rest of the world. It is a course which also Denmark has endeavoured to pursue for several decades, which opens up for new and mutually beneficial cooperation opportunities between our countries.
The combination of Danish experience, Korean ambitions, and shared visions in the green area will benefit both parties. Judging by the many business contracts, agreements and initiatives that characterise this visit, the future for Danish-Korean relations has never looked brighter – or greener.
In Denmark we say that the colour of hope is green, as is the colour of the first fresh leaves of spring and the sprouting plants. It is therefore my hope, Mr President, that this visit will prove the beginning of a fresh chapter in Danish-Korean relations: a chapter characterised by increasingly deeper and closer relations between Denmark and Korea in all areas.
Mr President,
Last year, Korea commemorated the 60th anniversary of the beginning of the Korean War, in which the Danish hospital ship, “Jutlandia”, contributed to providing humanitarian assistance. Denmark’s first links with the Republic of Korea were, consequently, established on the basis of fundamental values such as peace, freedom and humanity. These popularly rooted values have characterised our relationship ever since, and they therefore constitute the cornerstones of the enlarged strategic cooperation which, with this visit, is established between Denmark and Korea.
In the globalised world of today, geographic distance no longer plays a significant role. Even though we are located on opposite sides of the world, Denmark and Korea are close global neighbours due to our shared values and interests. This State Visit confirms it in the best possible manner.
Mr President,
Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tales have captured the imagination of children throughout the world for centuries, and he will no doubt forever remain the most well-known Dane in Korea. In connection with the celebration of the bicentenary of the birth of the poet, you accepted the assignment as a Hans Christian Andersen Ambassador – and thereby established a first close relation with Denmark.
Over the years, Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tales have taught children important lessons: that appearances may be deceptive, that heroes may take many forms, and that much may depend on the eye of the beholder – it may well be called: a question of design.
In Denmark, we are very conscious of good design, and in Korea much effort is invested in promoting good design. Mr. President, you yourself have contributed in ensuring this, when you served as Mayor of Seoul, and I remember from my visit how evident it is that also Koreans appreciate the significance of good design. The prospects of cooperation, also in this field, are not only great, but are already being carried out in a number of areas.
It is not easy to specify what characterizes good design, but the words most oftenly used are: simplicity, functionality, authenticity, sustainability as well as imagination. These are not only the characteristics of good design, but also the recipe for the good, future Danish-Korean cooperation.
Mr President,
Next year, the Crown Prince and the Crown Princess are planning to visit Korea. I know that they are looking very much forward to this visit and to taking active part in ensuring that the warm Danish-Korean relations are being continued.
In wishing the Korean people continued happiness and progress, and in the hope that the good relations between our two countries will prosper and develop, I raise my glass together with the Prince Consort to propose a toast to the President of the Republic of Korea and Mrs Kim.
