The days of 12-13 November 2019, The Crown Princess joins the minister for development cooperation Rasmus Prehn in visiting “Nairobi Summit on ICPD25: Accelerating the Promise”, which is being held to mark the 25th anniversary of the adoption of an action plan by 179 countries for efforts to benefit the world’s women and girls. The “Programme of Action” was agreed to during the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) in Cairo and, ever since, the Cairo Programme of Action has strengthened women’s rights over their own bodies. Thus, the fulfillment of the action plan as well as the sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) of women and girls are on the agenda in connection with the summit.  
 
Denmark, Kenya and the UN Population Fund (UNFPA) are the hosts for the event, and the summit’s various activities take place in the Kenyatta International Conference Centre (KICC) in Nairobi’s central business district. The Crown Princess takes part in her role as patron of UNFPA and will attend and participate in a number of sessions and panel debates in connection with the event. On the visit’s first day, Her Royal Highness will speak during the opening of the summit as well as at the signature session, “Ending Unmet Need for Family Planning: Reproductive Rights and Contraceptive Choices”, in which the future of reproductive rights and prevention choices will be explored. The Crown Princess also takes part as co-moderator at a panel debate on the connection between ICPD+25 and Beijing+25. On the second day of the visit, Her Royal Highness will, among other things, participate in and speak at the signature session “Fulfilling the Cairo Promise in a Fragile World”, in which support of women’s sexual and reproductive health and rights and the fight against gender-based violence will be in focus.

Welcoming ceremony at Nairobi Summit

The Crown Princess takes part in and speaks at the summit’s opening. In connection with the ceremony, there will also be speeches by UNFPA’s executive director, Dr. Natalia Kanem, UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed, development cooperation minister Rasmus Prehn and President Uhuru Kenyatta of Kenya.
 
Panel debate “Rights and Choices for All”

As a part of the welcoming ceremony, Her Royal Highness attends a panel debate for all of the summit’s participants. The panel consists of, among others, representatives and youth representatives from philanthropic organizations, civil society groups and the private sector.

Commitments session

The Crown Princess takes part in a session in which representatives from the participating countries submit the national commitments they have brought with them. Development cooperation minister Rasmus Prehn is Denmark’s representative.
 
Session “Meet the Leader”

Her Royal Highness is the moderator for the session “Meet the Leader”, in which prominent leaders from ICPD and young participants at the summit enter into a dialogue.
 
Parallel event on Beijing+25

The Crown Princess is co-moderator at a panel event that will tie ICPD+25 with Beijing+25, which in 2020 marks the 25th year since the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action was entered into in 1995. In addition to Her Royal Highness, young leaders and experienced activists take part in a debate about, among other things, the relationship between the two forums. The parallel event is arranged by UN Women.
 
Signature session “Ending Unmet Need for Family Planning: Reproductive Rights and Contraceptive Choices”

The Crown Princess takes part in and speaks at the signature session on reproductive rights and prevention choices. The session has the goal of exploring the future of, among other things, rights and prevention that can ensure sustainable development for all.
