The celebration of the 500th anniversary of the Dutch immigration to Store Magleby
HM The Queen and HRH Princess Beatrix were present on 20 May 2022 at the celebration of the 500th anniversary of the Dutch immigration to Store Magleby in Dragør Municipality.
The Queen's and Princess Beatrix’s visit marked that it was 501 years ago that the Danish king Christian II invited a number of Dutch farmers to Amager, where they settled in Store Magleby.
Upon arrival at Dragør Town Hall, the two royal guests were received by Dragør's mayor, Kenneth Gøtterup.

At the town hall, the mayor gave a speech and welcomed The Queen and The Princess to Store Magleby and Dragør Municipality.

The Queen and The Princess were presented with traditional Shrovetide barrel mallets.
Later in the day, Her Majesty and Her Royal Highness observed Shrovetide barrel riding, in which galloping riders hit barrels with mallets. The tradition originates from The Netherlands and has been a tradition in Store Magleby for several hundred years.

From the town hall, Her Majesty and Her Royal Highness rode in a coach with mayor Kenneth Gøtterup and his wife, Signe Beckmann, to Museum Amager.

At Museum Amager, The Queen and The Princess were welcomed by museum director Søren Mentz, and in the museum's courtyard, Her Majesty and Her Royal Highness were introduced to citizens dressed in traditional Amager costumes.
Afterwards, The Queen and The Princess visited the special exhibition "Fra Amagers private skatkammer", which offers 500 years of local history told through objects from private homes. The exhibition is on display in connection with Museum Amager's 100th anniversary.

Afterwards, The Queen and The Princess strolled to the old museum courtyard.

At the old museum courtyard, The Queen and The Princess saw the exhibition "500-års hollænderhistorie på Amager", which opened in 2021 in connection with the 500th anniversary of the Dutch immigration to Amager. The visit also included a presentation of a newly arranged collection of Amager costumes.

In the photo, museum director Søren Mentz tells about a painting in which the motif has its starting point in a royal visit at Museum Amager 100 years ago. In the painting, the former queen of The Netherlands, Queen Wilhelmina, and Prince Hendrik as well as Christian X and Queen Alexandrine appear with Crown Prince Frederik (IX).

After the visit at Museum Amager, The Queen and Princess Beatrix observed the traditional Shrovetide barrel riding on Hovedgaden in Store Magleby.

The riders at the Shrovetide barrel riding event represented the organization "Vennekredsen", which earlier in the day had also escorted the royal coach from the town hall to Museum Amager.

The day's final visit took place at Seerupgaard, where the Seerup Hansen family, which is of old Dutch ancestry, has managed to preserve old Dutch methods in their contemporary organic farming.

Throughout generations, the descendants of the Dutch farmers who came to Store Magleby 500 years ago have developed the specialized Amager farming method, which is a particular way of growing vegetables. The farmers sold the produce in Copenhagen, where Amagertorv (Amager Square) was among their selling spots.
