When The King and Queen host an Arts and Culture Ball in February, it will carry on a tradition that began in 1976, when HM Queen Margrethe and Prince Henrik for the first time held an evening party for guests who represented arts and culture. At that time, the gathering was held under the title ‘Arts et Lettres' (Arts and Letters).

Gatherings at which the invited guests were engaged in arts and culture date back to the time of Christian VIII (1786-1848), when the king, based on his great interest in arts, culture and science, extended invitations to get-togethers at the palace.

Throughout history, The Royal House of Denmark has had a tradition of inviting various actors in society to gatherings at the palace. For the Arts and Culture Ball, the guests are invited to dinner and entertainment in the Great Hall at Christiansborg Palace.
