The Golden Wedding Anniversary Coach is one among several coaches at The Royal Mews at Christiansborg Palace. The Golden Wedding Anniversary Coach, which should not be mistaken with the Gold Coach from 1840, is the newest of the royal coaches. 

The Golden Wedding Anniversary Coach was built over the course of nine months in 1891-92 by coachbuilder F.C. Schulz in Copenhagen and was a gift from master artisans in Copenhagen for the golden wedding anniversary of The King and The Queen at that time, Christian IX and Queen Louise, on 26 May 1892.

According to the king’s wish, the Golden Wedding Anniversary Coach was built lightly and elegantly in black-lacquered mahogany with the Danish Royal coat of arms painted on both doors. The high driver’s seat is decked with a box cover in the original red silk velvet, adorned with gold embroidery, gold fringes and gold tassels. On both sides of the box cover, the Danish coat of arms is embroidered in gold, silver and silk thread, made in 1892 by the firm Seifert, which today is known as the maker of student’s caps.

The Golden Anniversary Coach was the first Danish coach to have electric lights installed, both in the carriage lamps and inside the coach itself. The coach’s interior, called the coupé, has retained its upholstery of white silk-satin with Christian IX’s and Queen Louise’s monograms interwoven together with the Danish Royal coat of arms and crowns. The Golden Wedding Anniversary Coach was last used by HM The Queen for the 50th anniversary of her reign in 2022, when the coach’s box cover was restored. At Frederik X’s proclamation, the Golden Wedding Anniversary Coach will be lit up by electric lights inside the coupé.
