At Amalienborg, all four palaces have a flagpole at the top. When royalty is home at the palace, or when someone in the royal family has a birthday, the royal swallow-tailed flag is raised from a small opening in the roof. Below the opening in the attic is a large flag shelf unit, where the many royal flags lie ready for use year-round. Precisely here – well-camouflaged by the red colors of the numerous flags – the elf children have concealed themselves since last Christmas.
It’s normally very quiet in the attic, but this December morning is different... with Elf Mother hot on his heels, Elf Father is hopping as fast as he can all around the old Amalienborg attic.
”I have forgotten to keep track of The Royal Lineage! That is my noble duty as Royal House elf,” shouts Elf Father, when he sees his two children. “In just a month and a half, Her Majesty The Queen will have occupied the throne for 50 years, and I have completely forgotten to learn about all of those who have been on the throne before The Queen.”
To say that Elf Father has gotten into Christmas trouble would not be an understatement. Because when Elf Father was a young Royal House elf several hundred years ago, he made an agreement with a Christmas angel that he could sleep all year with the exception of December as long as he kept track of The Royal Lineage and the Royal House of Denmark’s history. Things went really well the first many years, but, in more recent times, Elf Father has only thought about spreading Christmas cheer at the royal palaces.
So, the elves hold a family meeting in the attic and agree that they will find the Christmas Angel. Can the angel perhaps help the four small cardboard elves become wiser about the Royal House of Denmark’s 1000-year-old history?
